Good to Know

Accommodations during the trek

Numerous tea houses cover the trekking routes, serving as common rest stops due to their affordable yet comfortable accommodations and additional amenities. Typically, tea house rooms are equipped with two mattresses, a shelf, and basic furnishings like chairs, tables, and cloth racks, accommodating around seven to nine people within a single room.

While some tea houses have introduced charging stations and Wi-Fi in their dining areas, the connectivity remains unreliable and often sluggish. Despite efforts in lower regions to manage electricity and networks, signals tend to weaken significantly at higher altitudes. Many tea houses around the Annapurna Base Camp area lack Wi-Fi, prompting the recommendation to obtain a Namaste SIM card for reliable 4G connections.

Budgeted expenses for "Meals/Food" typically cover hot baths, internet access, and charger use. Although not guaranteed, many tea houses often offer complimentary Wi-Fi. If you intend to utilize internet services and showers at each tea house, it's advisable to allocate additional funds for personal expenses.

Meals during the journey

Throughout the 10-day journey to Annapurna Base Camp, you'll encounter a variety of simple yet satisfying meal options designed to fuel you for the challenging trek ahead. While meals are generally uncomplicated, they're crafted to provide the necessary energy for your adventure.

Along the route, you'll find numerous teahouses and lodges offering a diverse selection of dishes, ranging from local Nepali fare to international cuisines. Some of the foods you can expect to enjoy during the trek include:

Dal Bhat: A staple of Nepalese cuisine, dal bhat consists of steamed rice (bhat) served with a flavorful lentil soup (dal), seasoned with turmeric, coriander, and cumin.

Momo: These delectable dumplings are often enjoyed as a light lunch or snack while trekking. They're made by stuffing a mixture of minced meat, typically chicken, or occasionally vegetables, seasoned with aromatic herbs and spices, inside a thin dough wrapper.

Thukpa: A popular Tibetan noodle soup known for its warmth and heartiness, especially during colder weather. It features a variety of vegetables, such as carrots, cabbage, and leafy greens, simmered in a savory broth alongside hand-pulled noodles.

Chow Mein: Frequently found along the trekking trail, chow mein is a stir-fried noodle dish typically made with bell peppers, onions, cabbage, carrots, and boiled noodles. Some teahouses may offer options to add chicken, shrimp, or tofu for those seeking extra protein.

Necessary Permits for Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Before embarking on your 10-day trek to the Annapurna Base Camp, it's important to obtain two key permits: the Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP).

TIMS Permit: Essential for any trek in Nepal, the TIMS permit provides authorities with crucial information to ensure the safety and well-being of trekkers. The cost of the TIMS permit is approximately NPR 2,000.

ACAP Permit: Established to promote sustainable development and environmental conservation, the ACAP Permit plays a vital role in preserving the delicate balance between tourism and the natural world. The cost of the ACAP permit is approximately NPR 3,000.

The common symptoms of Altitude Sickness during the trek

Traveling to elevations above 2,500 meters poses the risk of developing altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), regardless of your physical fitness level. Individuals with a history of altitude sickness, those who exercise or consume alcohol before acclimatizing to the altitude, and those with respiratory disorders are particularly vulnerable.

Prior to confirming your trip, it's advisable to consult your doctor for personalized advice based on your medical history and individual circumstances.

Symptoms of altitude sickness may include:

  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea or vomiting
