Everest Gokyo Lake Trek Overview

The Everest Gokyo Lake Trek is a 13 day trek that offers a refreshing alternative to the conventional Everest Base Camp route, ensuring trekkers still encounter breathtaking vistas of Everest and enjoy nights in the renowned Namche Bazaar, the entrance to the Khumbu Region.

This path to the Gokyo Lakes is less traversed, yet it unveils the charm of local village existence, presents awe-inspiring scenes of glacial rivers and rocky debris, showcases snow-crowned peaks, and, of course, unveils the mesmerizing turquoise expanse of the Gokyo Lakes.

Comprising six stunning lakes, the Gokyo Lake sits majestically at elevations ranging from 4700 to 5,000 m within the Gokyo Valley, nestled within the confines of the Sagarmatha National Park.

During your trek to Gokyo Valley, you'll see big mountains like Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Nuptse, Pumori, Ama Dablam, Kantega, and Kwangde.

Starting from Lukla, a quaint town nestled in Nepal's Khumbu region, your journey winds through picturesque valleys and over majestic mountain passes until you reach the awe-inspiring Gokyo Lakes. Situated at altitudes surpassing 4,000 meters, these six glacial lakes offer unrivaled vistas of Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Makalu.

The Gokyo Lake trek presents an immensely satisfying challenge. It serves as an immersive encounter with the Himalayan splendor and the rich cultural tapestry of Nepal. For an amazing trekking experience, the Gokyo Lake trek stands as the outstanding choice.

Route of 13 Day Gokyo Lake Trek

As soon as you land in Kathmandu, Nepal, the Gokyo Lake Route begins. At 1,300 meters (4,265 feet) above sea level, Kathmandu welcomes you with lively energy and a wealth of cultural history.

The next day, you take a scenic flight to Lukla, the starting point of your hike, which is situated at the entrance to the Himalayas. After landing at 2,651 meters (8,697 feet) at Lukla, you will trek for three hours to reach another village called Phakding.

The trip continues from Phakding to Namche Bazaar, a thriving commercial center situated 3,438 meters (11,279 ft) above sea level. Here, you spend a day getting used to the altitude and letting your body acclimate to the decreasing air pressure. The vibrant ambiance of Namche Bazaar and the breathtaking views of the surrounding hills make for an ideal setting.

You go up into the Himalayas to Dole, which is 3,680 meters (12,073 ft) above sea level. While passing through thick woodlands, the route provides views of native plants and animals. The next day, you go to Machhermo, which is a little community located at 3,870 meters (12,696 feet) above sea level.

You get more and more excited as you get closer to Gokyo because of the amazing view that lies ahead. When you arrive at Gokyo, which is 4,800 meters (15,748 feet) above sea level, the striking blue waters of the Gokyo Lakes welcome you. You can take in expansive vistas of the neighboring Himalayas, including Everest, Lhotse, and Cho Oyu, by taking an afternoon climb to Gokyo Ri.

Continuing your tour, you climb in the morning to Gokyo's fourth lake, which is 5,357 meters (17,575 feet) above sea level. Following your time spent taking in Gokyo's splendor, you return to Machhermo and spend the night there.

There's time to think back on the amazing sights and breathtaking experiences you've had as you make your way back to Namche Bazaar. Your Himalayan experience ends when you hike back to Lukla from Namche Bazaar.

You say goodbye to the mountains and take a quick flight back to Kathmandu, where you reflect on the treasured memories of your journey to Gokyo Lake.

TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) Card: All hikers in Nepal, including those going to Gokyo Lake, must have a TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) Card. It aids in the tracking of hikers by authorities and offers assistance in cases of emergency.

Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit: Since the Gokyo Lake Trek is located inside the park, hikers must have admission permission. This permit contributes to the funding of park infrastructure upkeep and conservation initiatives.

Khumbu Rural Municipality Entry Permit: Some Everest hiking routes, like the Gokyo Lake Trek, require special entry permission issued by the local rural municipality. This permission helps local communities and the tourism infrastructure thrive.

Accommodations During Trek to Gokyo Lake

Accommodations consist of comfortable lodges, known as tea houses, which are operated by Sherpa families. Each lodge features a central communal area with a large stove, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Guests can enjoy reading books and engaging in lively conversations with fellow trekkers. The bedrooms are typically unheated and furnished with two beds, mattresses, pillows, and blankets. It's recommended to bring a sleeping bag and a pillowcase for added comfort.

The lodges typically offer gas-powered showers and mostly have sit-down flush toilets, although some may also have squat toilets available. The food served on the trek is of high quality, comprising a mix of local Nepali/Sherpa dishes and western recipes. Popular meals include burgers and chips, as well as dal bhat with rice.

From fresh pastries to beer and from stir-fries to deep-fried Mars bars, lodges and shops offer a wide variety of culinary options. Additionally, numerous shops along the route sell various drinks, snacks, sweets, and chocolate. However, the biggest challenge for trekkers may be resisting the temptation of indulging in unhealthy foods and sticking to a simpler diet of rice and dal.

Other dinner options may include pasta dishes, curries, fried rice, pizza, and yak steak. Desserts such as apple pie, chocolate cake, or fruit are sometimes available to satisfy your sweet tooth.
