    Manaslu Circuit Trek Overview

Manaslu Circut Trek is a well known adventure in Nepal that takes you to the heart of the Himalayas and the beauty of nature. The 15-day Manaslu Circuit Trek, which follows Everest, Annapurna, and Langtang, is an incredible adventure. It's interesting to note that this is one of the few trekking areas where individuals can go alone on their own, as groups should consist of two people.

Manaslu, also known as Kuntang, stands as the eighth-highest peak globally, reaching an elevation of 8,163 meters (26,781 feet) and boasting an isolation of 106 kilometers (66 miles). Embarking on the Manaslu Circuit Trek immerses you in the enchanting Mountain of Spirit trails, an alternate name for Manaslu.

Various packages cater to exploring the Manaslu region, with the Manaslu Circuit trek being the most sought-after. Spanning 177 kilometers (110 miles), this route skirts the majestic Manaslu massif, descending over the pass toward Annapurna. Nepal's government first permitted trekking along this circuit in 1991. Manaslu's parent range, Mansiri Himal, is nestled within the Himalayas, while the Circuit Trek to Manaslu constitutes a segment of the illustrious Great Himalayas Trail.

The trails of the Manaslu Circuit Trek trace an ancient salt trading route alongside the Budhi Gandaki River, offering a glimpse into history. Moreover, Manaslu presents a myriad of attractions, including the sight of 10 peaks soaring above 6,500 meters (21,325 feet).

Spanning 15 days, the journey commences in Seti Khola and concludes in Dharapani. Throughout the Manaslu Circuit Trek's 15-day duration, you'll traverse the captivating landscapes of the Manaslu Conservation Area, with highlights including breathtaking vistas of Manaslu itself, standing tall at 8,156 meters (26,758 feet) as the world's eighth highest peak.

15 Day Route of Manaslu Circuit Trek

Commencing with a scenic journey from Kathmandu to Arughat, followed by Soti Khola, the Manaslu Trek sets off.

The initial journey to the trekking area spans a full day. The official trekking begins on day two as we depart from Soti Khola and ascend to Machha Khola (890m/2,965ft). Amidst enchanting forests, rugged ridges, terraced fields, and suspension bridges, the trek promises a delightful experience.

En route, you'll traverse various destinations, including Jagat, Deng, Namrung, Samagaun, Samdo, Dharmasala, Bhimtang, and Kathmandu.

    Throughout the journey, a panorama of peaks unfolds, including Manaslu (8,163 m / 26,774 ft), Annapurna I (8,091 m / 26,545 ft), Annapurna South (7,219 m / 23,693 ft), Gangapurna (7,455 m / 24,457 ft), Machhapuchhre (6,997 m / 22,950 ft), and Annapurna III (7,555 m /24,350 ft).

Crossing suspension bridges and traversing forests adorned with rhododendron, pine, hemlock, and oak trees, you'll encounter waterfalls, rivers, streams, mani walls, and other natural wonders. The 15-day Manaslu Circuit Trek comprises 10 days of trekking, with a day allocated for acclimatization.

Enjoy the Spectacular Views during Manaslu Circuit Journey

Adventurers on the journey are treated to a variety of breathtaking views:

    • Mt. Manaslu: The trek's focal point, the beautiful Mt. Manaslu, dominates the landscape and provides breathtaking vistas at every turn.
    • Budhi Gandaki Valley: With its spectacular background of towering cliffs and tumbling waterfalls, the route goes through the scenic Budhi Gandaki Valley.
    • High Alpine Meadows: Trekking over high alpine meadows offers a peaceful and calm setting while affording panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.
    • Lush woods: The lower altitudes of the walk are shrouded in dense rhododendron, pine, and bamboo woods that produce a striking mosaic of hues and textures.
    • Traditional Villages: Trekkers can immerse themselves in the local culture and observe traditional lives against the backdrop of the Himalayas by traveling through isolated Tibetan communities.
    • Larkya La Pass: Trekkers who complete the difficult ascent to Larkya La Pass are rewarded with unmatched views of glaciated valleys and snow-capped peaks that capture the unadulterated majesty of the Himalayas.
    • Annapurna Ranges: Trekkers are rewarded with breath-taking vistas of the Annapurna mountain range as the route descends towards Annapurna, which adds to the journey's varied and enthralling landscape.

Passing the Larkya La Pass during Manaslu Circuit Trek

One of the highlights of the Manaslu Circuit Trek is Larkya La Pass, which is located 5,106 meters (16,752 feet) above sea level. It is the highest point on the trekking path and offers hikers a mental and physical challenge.

The Manaslu and Annapurna mountain ranges are separated by the pass. It provides breath-taking, sweeping vistas of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Trekkers frequently discover themselves in the midst of an incredible environment made up of enormous stretches of glaciers, untamed landscapes, and snow-capped mountains.

Since Larkya La Pass is so high and its weather is unpredictable, it demands meticulous planning and preparation before crossing. Trekkers usually take their time climbing so that their bodies can adjust to the low altitude. There are challenging parts of the ascent that call for patience and courage. These parts are rocky and steep.

For trekkers, reaching the top of Larkya La Pass signifies the completion of their trip over the untamed and difficult landscape of the Manaslu area. Trekkers are rewarded with unmatched views of the neighboring Himalayan peaks, such as Manaslu, Annapurna, and Ganesh Himal, from the summit.

Best Season for Manaslu Circuit Trek

Fall, from September to November, and spring, from March to May, are generally regarded as the finest times to undertake the Manaslu Circuit Trek. This is the reason why:

Autumn (September to November): This is the best time of year to go trekking because of the clear skies, consistent weather, and comfortable temperatures. With sharp, clear sight, the vistas of the Himalayan peaks are often breathtaking at this time of year. In addition, the trails are less congested than they are during the busiest travel times, making for a more tranquil trekking experience.

Spring (March to May): This is a great time of year to do the Manaslu Circuit Trek. As the temperature rises, the rhododendron woods blossom, illuminating the surrounding terrain with vivid hues. The routes are progressively becoming more accessible as the winter snows melt, and the longer days make for more suitable hiking conditions.

    Good to Know

    Permits Necessary for the Trek

It is true that permits are needed to hike the Manaslu Circuit. The Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP) and the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (PERM) are the two primary permits required for this climb.

In order to travel across the restricted area and support local conservation efforts, certain permits are required. In addition, during the Manaslu Circuit Trek, hikers are frequently needed to have a licensed guide with them.

    Accommodation During the Journey

The tea houses dotted along the trail provide simple yet satisfying food and accommodation options that travelers often cherish. These establishments offer traditional lodging and dining experiences, typically featuring rooms furnished with twin beds, pillows, mattresses, and cozy blankets.

To ensure a seamless experience, trekkers are advised to book dining and lodging arrangements in advance. The facilities at these tea houses typically include outdoor squat toilets and amenities like Wi-Fi, hot water, charging outlets, and more, albeit with additional charges.

The menu at these tea houses commonly features "Dal Bhaat," a hearty dish comprising rice, lentil soup, vegetables, pickles, and other accompaniments. For breakfast, expect offerings like eggs, toast, and porridge, while various beverages such as tea, coffee, hot cocoa, and garlic soup are also available.

In addition to traditional fare, tea houses often cater to Western tastes with a selection of dishes. For added sustenance during your hike, consider bringing along protein bars, granola bars, dried fruits, and other snacks to keep you energized along the way.

Meals During 15 Day Manaslu Circuit Trek

Meals are usually served at the tea shops or lodges along the path on the Manaslu Circuit Trek.

The most popular food served is "Dal Bhaat," a classic Nepali meal made of rice, pickles, veggies, and occasionally meat. Since it's substantial and satisfying, this meal is a favorite among hikers and is frequently provided with endless refills.

Breakfast options often consist of toast, oatmeal, eggs (boiled, fried, or scrambled), and occasionally pancakes or muesli with milk. In addition, tea rooms sell a range of drinks, including herbal teas, coffee, and tea.

Many tea shops serve Western food such as spaghetti, pizza, noodles, and sandwiches in addition to Nepali cuisine. Remember that the availability of particular delicacies might change based on each tea house's unique location and amenities.

It's a good idea to pack a few snacks for the hike, particularly for longer days, such as protein bars, granola bars, almonds, and dried fruits, to add to your meals.

    Is Manaslu Circuit Trek Difficult?

It is said that the Manaslu Circuit Trek is a moderately challenging hike that is best suited for seasoned hikers who are in reasonably excellent physical shape.

There are significant heights during the route; the Larkya Pass, at around 5,135 meters (16,847 feet) in elevation, is the highest point. Since altitude sickness can be a problem, it's important to acclimate properly and ascend gradually.

There are many different types of terrain on the trail, such as rocky trails, suspension bridges, steep ascents and descents, and areas with loose gravel. Trekkers should be ready for lengthy days of hiking, averaging six to eight hours of walking each day over ten to fifteen kilometers of terrain.

The weather may also make things more challenging, particularly in the winter when there are sharp drops in temperature and a chance of precipitation at higher altitudes. Furthermore, because of the area's remoteness, there may not be as many facilities and services available, so hikers must be independent and ready for rudimentary lodging and amenities along the way.

Ultimately, even though the trip is a rewarding experience with breathtaking scenery, hikers must be psychologically and physically prepared for the trail's hardships. Before setting out on this expedition, it is advised to do extensive preparation, which includes strength training, cardiovascular training, and altitude acclimation.
